Baggage rules and regulations

  • How do I travel with my sports equipment?

For us to be able to prepare carefully, the transportation of certain items of sports equipment and special equipment requires prior approval and booking. More information is available here.
We recommend that you take care of securely packing your sports equipment or special equipment. If you have a special bag or case, you should use it as a package.

  • What happens when my baggage is oversized/non-standard baggage?

The maximum size of each piece of baggage in the sum of the three measures (length + width + height) may be at most 158 cm. The carriage of baggage whose sizes exceed this limit is subject to prior confirmation and payment according to the published rates. To confirm, please fill out this webform.

Oversized baggage (1 piece larger than 158 cm in the sum of three sizes) on departure from Dubai airport will be accepted only at a designated OOG counter for an extra fee of AED 45. The DNATA service company will charge the fee.

Pets can be transported in the cabin by agreement with the airline, subject to the established rules and fare payment. A pet must be transported in a container with a maximum size of 30 x 47 x 27 cm or 29 x 43 x 26 cm for an Embraer flight. A passenger may carry only one container, the weight of which, together with the animal, maybe at most 8 kg. Animals may also be transported as check-in baggage or cargo in a special compartment of the aircraft at a fixed rate by prior arrangement with the airline.

  • How much does an extra baggage cost on a flight?

Please select the departure city from the list on this page to check the rates for additional baggage.

Please note that if you purchase additional baggage more than 36 hours before departure, a 30% discount applies.

  • I'm on a connecting flight. Do I have to recheck luggage on connecting flights?

At the Air Astana check-in desk in the airport, ask to check your baggage directly to your final destination. If the airport's customs rules, technical possibilities of airport and other conditions allow it, your luggage will be processed to the final destination. The baggage tag will indicate the airport to which the baggage is checked in. You will find your suitcase on the baggage belt when you arrive at your final destination. If you want to get your baggage in the city of your transfer, tell the staff member at the counter.
Sometimes, you must check-in separately for all flights in your itinerary because customs regulations may require it if you are flying on different airlines or if the transfer time is longer than 24 hours. In this case you will be warned about this during registration.

  • Where do I get my baggage after landing?

Proceed to the Baggage Claim Area after leaving the aircraft. If your flight is international, you must first go through border/immigration control before collecting your baggage.

Keep your baggage tag until you leave the airport. It can be checked against the sticker on your suitcase to ensure you picked up your things.

Read here if your baggage has yet to arrive or you received damaged baggage.

  • What is the best way to pack bags?

Put stuff in a bag, suitcase, or other packages with handles. Check that the locks and clasps are working properly. If you carry crates or boxes, tie your baggage so the handles can hold it. Ensure the straps and ropes are strong and not torn during transport.
No objects should stick out of the baggage: they can damage other passengers' luggage, the plane and injure people. Do not tie 2 bags together, even if both belong to you. In this case, make two pieces of baggage or put things in one bag.
On the way, bags can get wet or dirty because of rain, snow, or someone else's poorly packed baggage. The suitcase will stay clean and dry if you wrap it in a case or film before the flight.
Before you check in your baggage, remove all stickers and tags from previous flights. Ensure your luggage does not contain documents or medicines you may need during the flight and that all fragile items are securely packed.

  • What if I need a piece of baggage weighing more than 32 kg?

Items of baggage weighing over 32kg cannot be accepted as checked baggage. Please check the information on Air Astana Cargo services.
We recommend distributing the excess weight over the rest of your baggage/hand baggage if this limit is exceeded.  If the baggage space is indivisible, you must arrange for such luggage using cargo transportation services. Read more about shipping here.

  • What can't I take on a plane?

It depends on which country you are flying in. Before you travel, check the Customs website to find out what items you cannot bring in/out. And make sure you're not carrying anything illegal.
For passenger safety, it is not allowed to carry hazardous substances and objects on the plane. Read more here.
We do not recommend carrying fragile items, perishables, cash, credit cards, securities, jewelry, or precious metals in the baggage. Take your documents, passports, ID cards, keys, and other valuables into the cabin. If you wear contact lenses or take medication, it is better to put them in your hand luggage, not in your baggage.

  • What does 1PC mean on my flight ticket?

The abbreviation PC stands for baggage space (from the English piece concept). The number in front of the abbreviation is the number of bags or suitcases you can take with you at the fare.  The total size of each piece of baggage (length + width + height) may not exceed 158 cm. The weight of permitted luggage varies depending on the booking class as well as the selected fare:

Business Class - 2 pieces of baggage up to 32 kg each
Premium Economy - 2 pieces of baggage up to 32 kg each
Sleeping Economy Class - 2 pieces of baggage up to 23 kg each
Economy Class - (Basic fare - 0 kg, Classic fare - 1 piece of baggage up to 23 kg, Plus fare - 2 pieces of baggage each up to 23 kg)

If you need to take more baggage than the class and fare you have selected and your Nomad Club membership level does not allow you to take advantage of the extra baggage allowances, the solution is to purchase additional baggage.

  • What if I need to bring more baggage?

You can buy extra baggage online with a 30% discount up to 36 hours before departure through "Manage booking" service on the website or in Air Astana mobile app, in the Booking and Information Centre, at the Air Astana sales office or at a travel agency.

  • How many bags can I take on a flight for free?

General free baggage allowance is standard for all passengers and varies depending on the class of Booking, as well as the selected fare:

    • Business Class - 2 pieces of baggage up to 32 kg each
    • Premium Economy - 2 pieces of baggage up to 32 kg each
    • Sleeping Economy class - 2 pieces of baggage up to 23 kg each
    • Economy Class - (Basic rate - 0 kg, Classic rate - 1 piece of baggage up to 23 kg, Plus rate - 2 pieces of baggage up to 23 kg each).

The overall size of each piece of baggage should be at most 158 cm (length + width + height). The carriage of baggage whose dimensions exceed this limit is subject to prior confirmation and payment according to the published rates. To confirm, please fill out this web form.

This rule applies to all passengers except for children under 2 years of age flying without a separate seat in the cabin.

The MSC is determined according to which airline performs the more significant and/or longest leg of the trip according to International Air Transport Association (IATA) rules.
