Baggage rules and regulations

  • Transportation of sports baggage.

To ensure proper handling, the transportation of certain types of sports and special equipment requires prior approval and booking. More information is available here.

We recommend that you securely pack your sports or special equipment. If you have a special bag or case, please use it for packaging.

You can submit a request for transporting sports equipment via the link here.

  • Oversized and non-standard baggage.

The total dimensions of each individual baggage piece (length + width + height) must not exceed 158 cm. Transportation of baggage exceeding these dimensions requires prior approval and is subject to additional charges in accordance with the published rates.
To obtain approval, please complete the request form.

Baggage items weighing more than 32 kg are not accepted for transport as checked baggage. If this weight limit is exceeded, we recommend redistributing the excess weight among your other baggage or carry-on items.

If the baggage is indivisible, it must be shipped using cargo services.

  • I have a connecting flight. How do I check in my baggage?

At the departure airport, please ask the Air Astana check-in agent to check you and your baggage through to your final destination. If customs regulations, technical capabilities of the airport, and other conditions allow, your baggage will be tagged to the final point of your journey. The baggage tag will indicate the airport where your luggage will be delivered. You will collect your baggage from the conveyor belt upon arrival at your final destination. If you prefer to claim your baggage at the connecting airport, please inform the check-in agent in advance.

In some cases, separate check-in for each segment of your journey may be required. This could happen due to customs requirements, if you are flying with different airlines, or if your layover exceeds 24 hours. If this applies to your itinerary, the airline staff will inform you during check-in.

Online check-in is available by the link.

  • How to properly pack your baggage?

Please pack your belongings in a bag, suitcase, or other container equipped with handles. Ensure that all locks and fastenings are in good working condition. If you are transporting boxes or crates, secure them in a way that allows them to be carried by handles. Make sure that any straps or ropes used are strong enough to withstand the transportation process and will not break.

No items should protrude from your baggage, as they may damage other passengers’ luggage, the aircraft, or cause injury. Tying two bags/suitcases/boxes together, even if both belong to you, is not permitted. In such cases, you must check in two separate pieces of baggage or repack your belongings into a single piece.

During transportation, bags may get wet or dirty due to rain, snow, or contact with improperly packed luggage. To keep your suitcase clean and dry, we recommend covering it with a protective case or plastic wrap before the flight.

Before checking in your baggage, please remove all tags and stickers from previous flights. Ensure that there are no documents or medications inside that you may need during the flight, and that all fragile items are securely packed.

  • What Items Are Prohibited in Checked Baggage?

This depends on the country you are traveling to. Before your trip, please check the official website of the relevant customs authority to learn which items are prohibited for import/export. Make sure you are not carrying any restricted items.

For the safety of all passengers, dangerous goods and hazardous materials are strictly prohibited on board. You can find more detailed information.

We strongly advise against placing fragile items, perishable goods, cash, credit cards, securities, jewelry, or precious metals in your checked baggage. Please keep important documents, passports, ID cards, keys, and other valuables in your carry-on baggage. If you wear contact lenses or require medication, we also recommend packing these items in your hand luggage rather than your checked bag.

  • Additional baggage.

You can purchase additional baggage with a 30% discount no later than 36 hours before your flight through the “Manage Booking” section on the Air Astana website or mobile app, via the Reservation and Information Center, any Air Astana sales office, or your travel agency.

If you are unable to make the purchase in advance, you may also pay for additional baggage at the airport check-in counters or sales offices. Please note that baggage fees at the airport are higher.

To view excess baggage fees, please select the departure city from the list on this page.

If the carriage is performed on flights of 2 or more carriers, including joint flights with other airlines, the baggage allowance of the dominant carrier on the route (MSC - Most Significant Carrier) applies. The MSC is determined according to which airline performs the more significant and/or longest leg of the trip according to International Air Transport Association (IATA) rules.
