What are the rules for transporting replacement batteries?

In order to ensure safety, spare lithium batteries, accumulators, including power banks and their elements are allowed to be transported only in hand luggage. 

The following types of batteries are allowed for carriage on Air Astana flights:

--Lithium-ion (Li-iON)

· Small spare batteries up to 100 watts/hour only in hand luggage, no approval from airline is required, but during check-in the passenger shall confirm that capacity of the battery is not more that 100Wh;

· Average spare batteries from 100 to 160 watts/hour for hand luggage only, approval is required. Such batteries are limited by 2 per passenger;

· Large batteries with a capacity of more than 160 watts/hour only through freight transportation.

 

--Lithium metal (LI-MH)

· Small spare batteries up to 2 grams in hand luggage only, no approval from airline is required;

· Average spare batteries from 2 to 8 grams in hand luggage only, approval is required. Such batteries are limited by 2 per passenger;

· Large batteries with a capacity of more than 8 grams for freight transportation only.

 

Replacement batteries must be individually protected and either be in the manufacturer's original packaging or have their terminals insulated to prevent short circuits.
