What are the rules for transportation of built-in batteries?

Transportation is allowed without additional approval if the following requirements are met:

Lithium-ion (Li-iON):

  • Small built-in batteries up to 100 watt-hours in checked baggage and carry-on luggage (no more than 15 per passenger).
  • Medium built-in batteries from 100 to 160 watt-hours in checked baggage and carry-on luggage (no more than 2 per passenger).
  • Large batteries over 160 watt-hours can only be transported as cargo.

Lithium-metal (LI-MH):

  • Small built-in batteries up to 2 grams in checked baggage and carry-on luggage (no more than 15 per passenger).
  • Medium built-in batteries from 2 to 8 grams in checked baggage and carry-on luggage (no more than 2 per passenger).
  • Large batteries over 8 grams can only be transported as cargo.

If your batteries do not meet the above requirements, prior approval is required. You will need to complete a form for confirmation.
